I need some help...please read!!

Hey ya'll,

I need some advice from all you chicken owners out there! I just got some baby chicks, and we are in the process of building our chicken coop. But I have been talking to people with chickens, and I am so worried about how I am going to keep racoons, coyotes, rats and opposums out, I want to get some electric netting but it is so expensive!! My friend kim said a racoon got 6 of her hens in one night!! I only have 6!! I am in love with all 6 of them! I know we should put cinder blocks, under the ground underneath the coop so nothing can dig, but should we put 2 layers of fencing? Like one chciken wire, and the other wire mesh? I am going to have a coop that is sealed up like a prison, except for the vent at the top, but i am freaking out about the security!! Someone please help me!! I am really stressing over this! Oh and please spread the word about my other blog http://www.appalachianhousewife.blogspot.com/ so I can make some money! Every job I am applied for or interviewed for has fallen through, so I need to sell some of my cards and the onsie! I need some chicken coop money!! Thanks!

My first chickens!!

Hey ya'll,
I have my first chickens!! I got them yesterday from tractor supply! I got 3 Bantam black boots, and 3 Rhode island reds! They are so precious! I love them, I know they have too grow up, but I want them to be little for ever! The pic is not good, my computer is having problems, and I cant use it or upload pics, so its not the greatest, but it works. Today they started  teaching each other how to scratch, so cute!!

Lots of things going on...

Hey ya'll,

Well for starters,  my computer has bit the dust, so I am using the one at our local library. We have done more on our property, there will be pictures soon. We burned all of our brush, and we got our tax money back, so we will be paying a guy to get our stumps up, and get it ready for permits, and a septic tank. Right now, it looks like a bomb hit our little acre, and blew it to bits.

I am getting 6 little baby chicks this week, from tractor supply!! I have never had chickens before, so it will be very interesting! I am very excited. I am so tired of buying eggs from the store, I feel dirty doing that for some reason. I am on my way to boycotting wal-mart!! We will be plowing 1/2 an acre in a few days for our garden, and I am going to learn  how to can our food, and make jelly this year. I already make our bread, and laundry detergent and fabric softener. I was very glad for the 2 warms days we had last week, I did 4 loads of clothes and hung them on the line!! It does not take much to make me happy!!

I drove to tractor supply today, while it was snowing and listened to some bluegrass music, boy was it pouring! I did my best to enjoy it, cause it will probably be our last snow for the year. Well, I better go, lots to do!! I hope you all have a very blessed Easter!!

I can't wait!

Hey ya'll,

I can't wait until it gets warmer! I want to the feel the dirt in my hands! I want to smell freshly plowed dirt, and I want my back to ache from bending over and putting seeds in the ground, I want dirt under my nails from digging and planting babies that I have started from seed. I want blisters on my hands from hard work and from holding the hoe and weeding. Winter is too long for me! I want to see little baby buds and veggies on my plants, I want to smell a tomato plant, I love the smell of tomato leaves. And as much as I hate lightening, and heavy rain, I want to hear thunder and rain pitter pattering on my roof, I want to smell rain in the heavy summer air. It seems like yrs have gone by since last summer. I dont like ticks, or snakes, or bad storms, but I need to be outside, I need to hang out my fresh clean clothes. I am ready to wear one layer of clothes instead of 4 or 5. Hopefully my mom and I are going to build cold frames and raised beds, and my husband and I are going to plow half an acre of garden, maybe more. And if I can afford it, I am determined to get some chicks this spring!

I have started another blog, its at : http://www.appalachianhousewife.blogspot.com/ and I have made several things and posted pics and pay pal buttons for them. And I am also accepting money orders. My latest creation is a onsie with a beatrix potter patch I cut out of some material and sewed on myself. There are cards with pics I took myself, and some cards that I made. And I will be adding some other things soon, that I am working on now.

Well I guess I better go for now, still lots to do before bedtime, God Bless you all!!

About Me

My photo
I live in the mountains of Western North Carolina, in a little camper, with my husband and family. We are trying to become self sufficient and live off the land. I am sick of all the sad news on TV, the economy, and the evil world we live in, so we are trying to make things as simple as possible and get back to the basics. I think if everyone did that, and had faith in God the world might be a better place. Follow along, as we live life in our little tin can, and try to make it a home, while learning to homestead.
