New item on appalachian house wife store website

Hey ya'll,

I just posted my newest project, its a fabric picture. I took this picture of the John Oliver cabin in Cades Cove, TN a few yrs ago. The other day, I printed off onto fabric and did a little sewing and french knots on it, and now I have it for sale on http://www.appalachianhousewife.blogspot.com/ for $65.00. I was going to frame it, but then I thought who ever buys might not want it framed, they might want to sew it onto something, so I left it free, with some extra of the muslin material on the sides for sewing room.

I need some advice about my Bantams...

Hey ya'll,

I had such a wonderful productive day! My mom and I went to the two scrap yards in our town to see if we could find some boards for her raised bed, and I needed some screen for a paper making project I am starting. The first scrap yard we went to, we found two boards for her, some screen and the most wonderful, magical, nostolgic suprise I could ever imagine! Let me start from the beginning. When I was 7 yrs old, my mom bought me a radio flyer wooden sled, with the red blades on it, it was beautiful, she bought because we were getting ready to move to the mountains. Well, when we moved to Hendersonville 7 yrs ago, my sled along with some other childhood things were in our shed in the yard, and our property flooded, we are talking like 5-6 feet of water, that happened 4 more times, very scary times for us. Anyway, my sled was washed down the creek into the rocky broad river never to be seen again. It broke my heart to peices. Ever since then, we have been looking in scrap yards and antique stores for another sled. Well, today, my mama found one, in the corner with a bunch of junk, for $10!!!! All it needs is some work on the wood, and a little cleaning up!! As you can see, its in the picture above, in all it's nostolgic glory!! My mama is the best scavenger ever!!

Well, on to other things. When we got home, I got the mail, and in it were the seeds I ordered! I ordered them less than a week ago, and I already have them!! Baker Creek heirloom seeds is the best seed company ever! They got here so fast, and they sent me a pack of heirloom beef steak tomato seeds for free with my order! I got 5 packs of greasy beans and 1 pack of ground cherries! For those of you who have never had  greasy beans, you are missing out on a treat! I think they are a Madison County thing, they are appalachian greasy beans. They are hard to get, you have to have connections to get any around here, so imagine my pure child like excitment when I found them in the baker creek catalog! I am very pleased with this company. Check them out at http://www.rareseeds.com/

Here are the over 200 wild onions my mama and I picked this afternoon, from the woods and our yard, I can't wait to eat these!!

Ok, so onto the advice I need about my bantams. They are about 4 weeks old now. So far when I reach my hand into the brooder to pet them, or feed them or anything for that matter, they have been sweet. Until today, today they nipped my finger and tried to flog me and fly up my arm! What is going on? Are they naturally aggresive birds? They freak out when I reach my hand in, is that normal? I even tried to put my hand in and let them know that I am there so I want scare them, is there something I can do diffrent? I want them to like me, some people hold them and love them like dogs, Do I just have crazy birds?

Rain, books, and good ole' self-reliance

Hey ya'll,

Well, it has been a while since I wrote a good long post, so here it goes. I am sitting here listening to the beautiful pitter patter of rain, it's a wonderful thing that rain, that God created for us to enjoy. Right now, it is washing away all that horrible, ugly, terrible pollen, that has given me the first really bad head cold that I have had since I was little. But I am have been helping my mom out in the yard, I cut her grass, did some weed eating, cleaned up all the winter nasties from around the house and the gardens, and helped her plant a bunch of things, and get her yard pretty again. The reason I am helping her is because last year, she was diagnosed with degenterive disk desiease, and siactica, and leg pain, and has had a very hard time getting over the worst of it, sometimes she still over does it, and she hurts for a few days, but today was a good day and we got a lot done. So, back to the rain, I took my chicks out for some fresh air and sunshine today, they loved it, and we got their brooder all clean and fresh, and they are in and happy and sleeping like babies now. So, now, we are inside with the windows open, listening to the rain clean everything. My mom and I were standing by the kitchen window, watching it rain, eating crackers I made last night from scratch, and mozzarela cheese I made from organic whole milk, and it was so good and creamy, and we both had the same thought at the same time ( we do that a lot) I started to say, if you had told me 10 yrs ago, that I would be.... and she finished my thought.... standing here eating homemade crackers, homemade cheese, and taking care of 6 baby chickens, I would have said you were crazy!! We just laughed, and shook our heads. It makes me feel really good to know, that I am eating cheese I made, bread and crackers I made, and that in a few more months, I will be eating eggs from chickens that I raised and loved. And come July and August, we will be eating all vegetables and some fruit that we grew. I love it!!  Soon, very soon evil, horrible Wal-mart, we will part, I will no longer need you and your ugly chain stores that are taking over the whole world, killing our precious land, and trees, and slowing killing us with your junk food and crap!! I will boycott you, hahahahahahaha very soon!!! Your day is coming!!
So, onto the subject of books. I love to read, always have. Ever since childhood, I have had a very vivid imaginantion. So when I find a good book, I can usually finish it in a bout 3 days. I just get lost in it and I am in my own little world. It's how I escape this crazy world we live in. So I thought to myself, why not share this joy with other people. So when I finish a book, I will post it on here, (not the book, but a picture, title, and review). I believe that the people of this world are to hung up on T.V, video games, and technology. When I was little, I played outside, read, and used my imgagination. When we moved from the city and into the mountains of Madison County, NC we only had one TV channel, and our phone had a party line, so sometimes we coudnt watch TV or even use the phone. And I am so glad that I grew up that way, it shapped who i am today. So my first book review is a book called "The Lost Quilter" by Jennifer Chiaverini. It one of many that  the author writes and all her books are written about quilts, and the people who made them. The books are fiction. This book was so good, I read it in 3 days, and when I got to the end I cried tears of joy, it is one of the best books I have ever read. You really must get it and read it!!
Right now, I am reading the auto-biography of Cathrine Marshall. I discovered her when I was read and watched the book and mini series " Christy". This book and movie touched my heart because it is a true story, the names are changed, and the story is not all true, but it is based on a true story, about a girl from Asheville, which is where I lived, that goes to a backwoods mission in TN, 10 min. from where I grew up, to teach school. So when I was at the library, I found the book about Catherine Marshall, who is actually the daughter of (Christy) Leanora Whitaker Wood, who the story is based on. I know it sounds confusing now, but the book Cathrine wrote is called Christy, and the book that I am reading now, is called "meeting God at ever turn". So when I get through reading it, I will post a pic and review.
Well, I guess that's all for now, I hope you all are having a wonderful warm, refreshing spring like I am! God Bless!!

About Me

My photo
I live in the mountains of Western North Carolina, in a little camper, with my husband and family. We are trying to become self sufficient and live off the land. I am sick of all the sad news on TV, the economy, and the evil world we live in, so we are trying to make things as simple as possible and get back to the basics. I think if everyone did that, and had faith in God the world might be a better place. Follow along, as we live life in our little tin can, and try to make it a home, while learning to homestead.
